We look forward to welcoming both new and returning members of the campus design community to Jacobs Hall for the start of the Spring 2024 semester. You are cordially invited to join us at the back to school events below. All events below are held in-person!

 

DROP IN JACOBS HALL MAKERSPACE TOURS

Every Tuesday and Wednesday, starting 1/16/24 • 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM

Jacobs Hall, West Lobby, Student Welcome Center (103 Jacobs)

Curious to learn more about what the Jacobs Institute Makerspace has to offer? Join us for a building tour to learn about the Jacobs Hall Makerpass and get a tour of the Jacobs Hall Makerspace woodshop, metal shop and advanced prototyping lab.  Meet our Design Specialists and learn about upcoming workshops and other opportunities to get involved with the vibrant, interdisciplinary student community that you can take part of at Jacobs. Please check in at the Student Welcome Center, located in 103 Jacobs in the west lobby of Jacobs Hall. The entrance can be found next to the Etcheverry Hall breezeway. 2530 Ridge Road; Berkeley, CA 94720-1740. Drop-tours occur every 20 minutes within the hour, starting at the top of the hour. DESIGN [FAIR] AT BERKELEY

The Design [Fair] at Berkeley is a platform for Berkeley clubs, decals, and design-related organizations to share what they do for students interested in learning and exploring design. The event is being organized by Design@Berkeley and co-sponsored by Jacobs.

 

How to Create an Effective Portfolio for Designers Starting Their Journey

Portfolios are an essential asset for working professionally as a designer; they are where you showcase your work and tell the story of who you are. If you’re interested in breaking into the design field, you won’t want to miss this exciting talk by Abe Yang, Senior Designer at DuckDuckGo and Cal EECS graduate. He’ll lay out what employers are looking for in a portfolio and will share practical tips for developing materials to include. Pizza and refreshments will be served.

Are you the first in your family to go to college? Join us for our semesterly event, First-Gen @ Jacobs at the Jacobs Institute of Design and Innovation! This event is specifically designed for first-gen students; we will provide a detailed overview of Jacobs resources, courses, makerspace, personalized tours, and a free lunch. Make sure to join us to learn more about us and how to join our community. Hope to see you there!

 

Jacobs Makerspace Open House

Meet the Makerspace staff and other members of the Jacobs community at our Makerspace open house. We will have equipment demos, takeaways, project displays, building tours, and more. This event is open to all UC Berkeley students. This is a great opportunity to check out our maker resources whether you are deciding to get a Maker Pass, have one and want to know what you can do with it, or just explore the space with your friends.

 

Campus Makerspace Crawl

Friday, 2/2/24 • 11AM–1PM. POSTPONED—Date TBA

The event will begin at the west lobby entrance of Jacobs Hall

If you are interested in joining the vibrant community of makers, designers, and tinkerers at UC Berkeley, then join us on the campus makers’ crawl! We will start at the Jacobs Hall Makerspace and continue to other campus spaces. See the unique resources offered at each location and learn how you can join the campus’s rich ecosystem of hands-on creativity. Bring your curiosity and comfortable walking shoes.

We will visit the following sites, in this order:

Please review the Campus Makerspace Crawl Route for a map of each space location and directions to each space. The group will spend ~10 minutes in each space. If you miss the start of the crawl and wish to join midway, email janreyjavier@berkeley.edu to get the group’s current location.
