Congratulations to the Master of Design students for completing their first semester as the very first MDes cohort! The students have all risen to the challenge of beginning a new program while working remotely—and their work and dedication have paid off. Here are a few recent updates from the cohort.
Five Berkeley MDes students and their teams have been honored with a prestigious San Francisco Design Week Award by the nonprofit organization San Francisco Design Week (SFDW). SFDW is an international design competition that seeks to encourage thought leadership by supporting designers whose works contribute towards a positive future society. Learn more.
And another round of applause to team Prana, who was also selected as a finalist for the Fast Company World Changing Ideas Awards for 2021.
Julia Park (MDes SP22) and her collaborator Louana Gurrauard, are featured in Berkeleyside for their environmental installation, part of Monument to Extraction, an exhibition and audio tour at the Albany Bulb that recalls the social, cultural and environmental histories of this former landfill. Kyle Steinfeld, Associate Professor of Architecture and MDes Associate Director, is featured in CityX Venice, Italian Virtual Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2021 with his project, ARTIFICIALIS RELEIVO.
In ARTIFICIALIS RELEIVO, Professor Steinfeld explores AI and architecture and presents what he finds interesting about working with machine learning models and creative design practice.
As he states, “This series will reveal how recent developments in artificial intelligence have dislodged some of our basic assumptions about the nature, purpose and utility of tools of computational design.”
ARTIFICIALIS RELEIVO will be published as a video series over the next few months. To produce this series, Kyle is joined by MDes students Titus Ebbecke, Georgios Grigoriadis, and David Zhou on his project team. Learn more.
