TrashScan is an interactive device that takes a fun approach to educating community members about sustainability. Informed by research and interviews with the Cal sustainability community, the team aimed to design a device that would help educate users on the intricacies of recycling and composting and would make it easier to sort waste.
When a user places an object onto TrashScan’s platform, an image of the object is sent to an external object recognition API, which returns a description string. TrashScan then takes the description and compares it with a multiclass linear classifier to determine which bin it belongs in. When it is properly sorted, a video response is played on the platform, informing users which bin to use in a clear, engaging way.
