We are thrilled to announce that our Technical Design Team has been recognized as one of the recipients of UC Berkeley’s Extraordinary Teaching in Extraordinary Times award! Congratulations to our Design Specialists and Technicians, Adam Hutz, Chris Parsell, Cody Glen, Gary Gin, and Nicole Panditi—led by Joey Gottbrath, our Technical Lab Director—alongside Aleta Martinez and Erik Sandall, for your commitment to ensuring our students and the Jacobs Design Community thrive in these unprecedented times.

This award honors the UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and student instructors who have embraced the challenges of 2020 and the pandemic head-on, innovating and working beyond their usual job capacities to ensure students remain engaged and supported. The Academic Senate Committee on Teaching received over 500 nominations for this award, with the final awardees spanning 32 departments across a range of disciplines and teams.

Our team was honored for their dedication to remote support for our courses, keeping teaching excellence and accessibility at the top of mind. “Recognizing that the lack of access to fabrication equipment and design staff mentorship would have a significant impact on learning and discovery, they developed a remote project support service that allows students, faculty, and staff to submit formatted part files for fabrication and pick-up. The team created an automated, remote print queue for the fleet of 3D printers. They partnered with faculty on alternate class projects that could be supported in the new environment. And they offered ongoing online workshops and office hours for faculty and students. The team supported over 2000 students in over 40 classes this Spring, Summer, and Fall of 2020, and plan to continue incorporating these remote services even as the campus reopens, to increase access and equity in the campus-making community.”

Congratulations to all of the recipients and a special thank you to our team for working so diligently to ensure the success of our students.
