Halloween at Jacobs!

October 8, 2021 | 12:24 pm

It’s officially Spooky Season at Jacobs Hall! This year, we are excited to be offering a number of Halloween-themed events, workshops, and contests! We would also like to remind you that Halloween is a great reason to explore the fabrication resources available at Jacobs Hall, the CITRIS Invention Lab, Moffitt Makerspace, Student Union, and other online resources. Take a peek at the sidebar to learn more about the opportunities at each space. If you have questions or related resources to share with the community, please contact Amy Dinh at amydinh@berkeley.edu.

WORKSHOP: Spooky Digits: A Ghastly Lifecasting Primer
Friday 10/22, 1–4 PM in Jacobs 12o
Register here

There’s no nightmare so grisly, so fiendish, so absolutely haunting for a Jacobs Design Specialist as the image of dozens of student fingers strewn about the woodshop floor! In this Halloween-themed workshop, we’ll “dip our digits” into lifecasting, the process of replicating organic objects in inorganic materials. Whether you’re interested in casting as a low-volume prototyping process, or developing some creepy accoutrements for your Halloween costume, join Design Specialist Adam for this primer on “reproducing the (sur)real” in Jacobs Hall.

WORKSHOP: Design Your Own 3D Printed Pumpkin
Sunday 10/24, 11:30 AM – 1 PM online
Register here

Do you love the creativity of pumpkin carving but are sad to see your creations slowly succumb to the ravages of time? Through the magic of 3D printing, you can now give your Halloween creations ever-lasting life! Join our Student Supervisor Aashray Manchanda for a beginner-friendly online tutorial on 3D modeling. You will learn how to design your own customized pumpkin, as well as how to get it 3D printed at Jacobs Hall using your Maker Pass or JPS.

The workshop will be conducted using Onshape, a cloud-based 3D modeling software that is free to students and educators; no software download is necessary. Participants are encouraged to sign up for an Onshape account and join the workshop via computer in order to follow the tutorial.

CRAFTER DARK: Needle Felted Pumpkins & Other Spooky Things
Thursday 10/28, 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM in MLK Dining Room, 1st Floor MLK (northwest corner of the building)

The Studio Union hosts free drop-in arts and crafts workshops once a month. Join their seasonally themed October Crafter Dark workshop to make some DIY Halloween decorations.

TREAT-OR-TREAT
Friday, October 29th 11 AM – 3 PM in 103 Jacobs Hall

Any student who drops by the Jacobs student services office on October 29th with their DIY costume or prop will get a small treat and kudos. Students who can’t come to campus can also share their creations online by tagging @jacobsdesigncal and using the hashtag #JacobsHALLoween on Instagram. We’ll reshare highlights to our Instagram account.
